Getting Back In The Game

Of course I realised that going back into the workplace wouldn’t be that simple after a stretch out of the rat race while freelancing/child raising. There’s a lot of mental stuff I needed to try and get my head around, like the fact that a hiatus would mean that the workplace was inevitably a more competitive forum – and during the course of my sabbatical my dire IT skills have gone from lackluster to barely entry level. Nevertheless, I wasn’t about to let self doubt and a huge laundry pile get in the way of my home exit strategy.

I set up a meeting for a really exciting prospect, but things did not go smoothly. Thinking after the morning school run I would have time to come home and prep for my interview, I threw on the first thing I saw – solely for the purpose of the school drop off. Active wear. It was only when I got to school I realized my youngest was performing in the morning Assembly and I was emotionally required to stay. Plenty of time, I told myself. Except there wasn’t and I ended up rushing straight to the meeting in – NOOOOOO – yes, my sports wear. And I’m not even a sporty person. If you thought it couldn’t have got worse then you’d be wrong. The death knoll in my fabulous re-launch into the cut and thrust of the fashion world was the moment when, after feeling a scratchy itch in my sports bra, and momentarily forgetting I was in company, I delved into my top and pulled out a Lego man. I laid down my Lego man down next to my cappuccino, and accepted I may be continuing as a freelancer for a little longer.
